Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill statement

Thank you to all those who have taken the time to share their views on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill. I have considered them all carefully. Understandably, this debate gives rise to strongly held views and legitimate arguments from both sides.

I believe that people should be given genuine choice, dignity and control over what happens to them as they near the end of their life. I also want to make sure that there are safeguards in place in any new law.

Today I voted for the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill. However, on a free vote by Members of Parliament the Bill did not pass and will not progress any further. However I am sure that there will continue to be a debate about and a focus on end of life care. In any event it is very important that progress is made on improving palliative care for everyone who needs it.
