Ten year old Amy Cousins of Sidmouth Primary School has won the annual competition for Hull North Primary School pupils to design Diana Johnson MP's official Christmas card.
The Hull North MP announced the news today (4 December) after Amy's winning design was selected from hundreds of entries by competition Judge Dean Windass, Hull City's Wembley goal hero. Dean Windass recently met Amy to congratulate her on producing the winning entry.
After being printed at Hull's Palm Press, Amy's winning Christmas card design will be sent to hundreds of people across the country; including constituents, local, regional and national figures in charities, business, the media and politics - including the Prime Minister.
On 16 December, Amy will be handing in her winning card design at 10 Downing Street when she travels, courtesy of competition sponsor Hull Trains, to Westminster. After visiting Downing Street, Amy and her family will meet Diana for tea at the House of Commons.
Amy and the competition's runners up have been invited by Hull City to attend the Tigers' Premiership match against Middlesbrough on Saturday 6 December at the KC Stadium. They will also receive prizes donated by local competition sponsors and £30 book tokens.
Amy's winning card will be displayed, along with all the runners up, in a special presentation on the Big Screen in Hull's Victoria Square in the lead up to Christmas.
Hull's BBC Open Centre in Queen's Gardens will also have a pre-Christmas display of the original artwork for all the competition entries.
Diana Johnson MP said: "I recently asked Hull North primary school pupils to design my official 2008 Christmas card. I am now delighted to announce Amy Cousins of Sidmouth Primary School as my overall competition winner.
"To use an old football cliche, I am over the Moon that my winner was chosen by Dean Windass, who kindly agreed to be this year's competition Judge. Dean's goal in that historic Wembley play-off final is one of the enduring memories of 2008.
"This is the fourth Christmas that I have held this competition for Hull North primary schools. It has always produced a Christmas card better and brighter than many of the run-ofthe-mill ones that you buy in the shops.
"After such a tough year, a bit of Christmas colour, as seen through the eyes of our youngsters, will be more welcome than ever!
"There are great prizes for the winner and the runners up for which I thank our local sponsors. Above all, I thank the many hundreds of Hull North children and their teachers who make this competition possible. I now look forward to welcoming Amy and her family to Westminster."
