No junk at playtime

Hull North Labour MP Diana Johnson today welcomed a new Government pledge on healthy eating in schools.

Education Secretary, Ruth Kelly, this week announced a ban on low quality reprocessed food from next September and a ban on vending machines selling crisps, chocolate and

sugary fizzy drinks in schools.

Diana Johnson MP said:"This is great news for Hull's secondary school pupils and will reinforce the pioneering work of Hull Council in promoting healthy eating in Hull's primary schools.

"It's the right thing to do because a healthy diet can help to improve children's attention span and attainment. Labour wants every child, no matter what their background, to fulfil their potential for learning."

"This announcement is another step towards banishing junk food from Hull's secondary schools."

In her speech to Labour's conference, Education Secretary, Ruth Kelly MP said: "I am absolutely clear that the scandal of junk food served every day in school canteens must end. So today I can announce that I will ban low quality reprocessed bangers and burgers high in fat, salt and sugar being served in schools, from next September."

"And because children need healthy options throughout the school day, I can also announce that from next September no school will be able to have vending machines selling crisps, chocolate and sugary fizzy drinks."
