Hull North MP Diana Johnson has urged older people in Hull to apply for Winter Fuel Payments as quickly as possible in order to get them by Christmas.

Over-60s who have not received a Winter Fuel Payment before and who are not receiving State Pension or another social security benefit - other than Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit and Child Benefit - need to apply.

Those claiming by 19 September should receive payments before Christmas.

Diana Johnson MP said: "As the summer ends, we need to plan for the colder months ahead.

"World-wide economic factors mean that people are feeling the pinch with higher food and fuel costs. Heating homes will be a real worry for many Hull people this winter. This is why I support action through Winter Fuel Payments to boost how much money older people get to help with heating costs.

"Older people in Hull should make sure that they do not miss out on the cash help that they are entitled to. Many over-60s who have not received a Winter Fuel Payment before will need to apply.

"For households with someone aged 60 to 79 there will be an extra £50 this year bringing the total up to £250. Households with someone aged 80 or over will receive an extra £100 this year £400 in total.

"People claiming by 19 September should receive payment before Christmas. Those wanting more information on getting Winter Fuel Payments should call the helpline on 08459 151515 or visit ."

Diana Johnson MP is also encouraging Hull people to look at other ways to save money on heating bills: "Now is also the ideal time of year to check on the energy efficiency of our homes.

"As much as £1 in every £3 spent on heating bills is wasted in poorly insulated homes. Proper loft or cavity wall insulation can save an average household up to £300 a year on heating bills.

"The Labour Government's Warm Front programme is helping to fight fuel poverty by increasing household energy efficiency. Up to the end of March this year, Warm Front had assisted 1,087 Hull North households - with 677 getting a brand new central heating system, or repair to their current central heating, and 327 others now saving cash and carbon emissions through home insulation.

"I would also encourage people to contact their energy suppliers to see whether they qualify for a reduced tariff and find out what they provide to improve energy efficiency.

"Customers should shop around and consider switching their energy supplier as different firms offer different tariffs. Many will be able to save a three-figure sum on their annual heating bill by switching."
