MP inspects Newland Avenue road scheme

Hull North MP Diana Johnson this week joined Hull City Council officers and local residents to inspect the recent traffic management improvements at Newland Avenue.

The works, aimed at improving road and pedestrian safety, parking and the environment along Newland Avenue, were completed in 2005 with £1.5 million of funding from the Government and Hull City Council.

Diana Johnson MP said: "As local people had raised questions with me about some of the changes in Newland Avenue, such as the 'courtesy crossings', I was interested to hear from Council officers about the thinking behind the scheme.

"In designing the new parking spaces, cycle racks and wider pavements, a careful balance has been required between the needs of different stakeholders living and working locally. However, the fundamental concern is whether the scheme enhances the safety of local pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. Hull City Council has a good record on improving road safety, especially around local schools.

"Although the initial impression about the Newland Avenue scheme's impact seems positive, I am pleased that the Council will continue with local consultation. As new statistics on Newland Avenue road casualties appear, we will soon be able to make an informed judgement on further changes that may be needed."
