MP in battle to reopen Hull North Post Offices

Diana Johnson MP

31/07/06, 00:00

Hull North MP Diana Johnson today expressed concern about the 'temporary closure' of two local Post Office branches in her constituency.

The branches in Bransholme North and Stoneferry have been closed since 30 May and 3 July respectively due to management difficulties.

The MP, who has been in correspondence with the Post Office regarding the closures, is concerned about difficulty that is caused to many local people left without Post Office branch facilities within walking distance of their homes - especially in the more remote part of Hull, such as Bransholme.

Diana Johnson MP is adding her voice to the Post Office's appeal for potential sub-postmasters and possible retail partners to come forward to enable the reopening of these Post Office branches, at or very near their current sites, on a viable basis.

The Post Office Agency Recruitment Team can be contacted on 0845 601 6260.

Diana Johnson MP said: "Even in an era of rapidly changing technology, the community Post Office remains a vital facility for many local residents and businesses. It is therefore unacceptable that many local people, especially in the more isolated parts of Hull, have been left without a Post Office a reasonable walking distance from their home.

"So far, these closures have been deemed 'temporary' by the Post Office. However, the longer the closures persist fears will grow locally that the situation will prove permanent.

"I therefore appeal for potential sub-postmasters and commercial partners who might be able to assist in reopening these Post Offices to come forward as soon as possible. The Post Office Agency Recruitment Team can be contacted on 0845 601 6260."
