MP calls in at Leconfield Defence Transport School

Diana Johnson MP

10/04/06, 00:00

Hull North MP Diana Johnson visited Leconfield's Defence School of Transport today.

The base is one of the region's biggest employers. About 800 civilian staff, including many from Hull, work at the Defence School of Transport, which has an annual budget of £40 million. About 14,000 students are trained there every year.

The MP's visit comes comes as the military's training in the UK is being reviewed by the Ministry of Defence. The changes could see activities at sites including Leconfield taken over by private operators and moved to sites elsewhere.

Diana Johnson MP said: "After being contacted by a number of constituents concerned about the future of Leconfield's Defence School of Transport, it was a pleasure to spend a morning at this major local employer.

"I saw at first-hand the major contribution that the facility makes to our armed forces."
