Hull North MP Diana Johnson today called on local people in Hull to get involved in a major Government consultation on the future of local stroke services.
The Government is developing a new National Strategy for Stroke aimed at modernising stroke prevention, treatment and care. A consultation document entitled A new ambition for stroke was recently published by the Department of Health so that people can have their say on how stroke services can be changed or improved.
The Hull North Labour MP made the call as she met with staff at Castle Hill Hospital's Stroke Unit to discuss the Government's review and the need to build on the progress that has already been made in Hull over the past decade in improving care, treatment and rehabilitation services for stroke victims.
Stroke is the third biggest killer in the UK and the biggest cause of serious adult disability. On average around 60,000 people each year are likely to die from stroke and at least 300,000 people are living with moderate to severe disabilities as a result of stroke in England. As the population ages, and with problems such as obesity, these figures are set to increase.
The standard of stroke services varies widely across England. Although a recent national survey showed a general improvement in stroke care, over a third of people who have a stroke are still not treated in a specialist stroke unit which can save lives and reduce disability.
Diana Johnson MP said: "Many people in Hull have been affected by stroke. It is a devastating condition that can strike anyone at any time. Getting treatment quickly to stroke patients massively increases their chances of a full recovery and being able to resume an independent life.
"This is why we need to see further improvements in stroke services, along with increased public awareness of the symptoms and risk factors for stroke.
"It was great to meet the excellent Stroke Unit team at Castle Hill Hospital today to discuss what further changes are needed to improve stroke services in and around Hull.
"However, the new National Strategy for Stroke will be much stronger if people with experience of stroke, or an interest in stroke services, take part in the Government's consultation process before the deadline of 12 October. This includes stroke survivors, their carers, family members and health and social care professionals."
