New facilities for Hull's young people could be built under Government plans to invest in youth services across England.

Diana Johnson MP today welcomed proposals that will pave the way for long-lasting investment in local youth facilities. The Hull North MP said if the plans were passed by Parliament, local communities could bid for funding to improve facilities for young people in the area.

Diana Johnson MP said: "Young people in Hull need more places to go and things to do for their sake and that of the wider community. I'm delighted that the Government is to make a major new investment in youth services from money that was unclaimed and unused. I want Hull to benefit from this.

"Over the coming months I will be talking to young people and local community organisations about what facilities they would like to see available in the future. It will be up to them to decide what Hull needs and draw up proposals for funding, whether that's for sports facilities, places to go to participate in activities like dance and drama, mobile youth centres or skate parks.

"Once the plans are passed by Parliament and the scheme is fully up and running we can then be quick off the mark with our bid for funding.

"The idea is to create a lasting legacy for the community, creating assets to benefit current and future generations and I'm excited at the chance to help improve what's on offer to young people in Hull."

Funding for new youth services are part of Government plans to reinvest in local communities unclaimed assets that have been lying dormant in bank and building society accounts for at least 15 years.
