More rubbish from the Lib Dems

Hull North MP Diana Johnson has joined Hull North residents to demand an end to the chaos in Hull City Council's refuse collection service.

A management reorganisation of the service undertaken recently, which included changes to the pay and conditions of refuse collection staff and new crews working different rotas in unfamiliar areas, has led to increased staff sickness levels, refuse vehicles struggling to cope and collection rounds not being completed.

As a result, the Labour MP has been contacted by many Hull North residents who have not had recycling collected for up to a month, despite repeated calls to the local authority. In particular, Diana is concerned about those residents who require assisted collections, such as those who are visually impaired. They have been particularly hit.

Diana Johnson MP said: "After hearing the Lib Dem Council Leader on the radio a few days ago giving Humberside Police his advice on how they should do their job, it is ironic that his administration has trashed a basic service for which they are responsible.

"The Council is claiming that this is a tiny and short-lived problem, but from listening to Hull North residents who have approached me, and visiting some effected areas, it seems that the breakdown of the bins service has been more extensive and longer lasting than we have been told. This is more than just minor teething problems.

"Some council tax-payers have not been getting the refuse service for which they pay, and which is essential to public health and for Hull to improve our recycling record. This has caused worry to many residents, many of whom simply do not have the time to be on the phone day after day to the Council.

"I would ask that the Council Leadership devotes its attention to making sure that Hull City Council provides the basic services required of a council. How hard can it be to organise an efficient refuse service?"
