Diana Johnson MP has pledged that the Labour campaign for a new pedestrian crossing in Beverley High Road will continue.
The Hull North MP made her promise after Lib Dem councillors voted down a Labour amendment that would have funded the crossing at Hull City Council's Budget meeting yesterday (26 February).
Hundreds of residents living along the fast-moving and busy stretch of Beverley High Road between Hall Road and the Dunswell Roundabout currently have to walk a quarter of a mile to cross near the Tesco Supermarket at Hall Road. Those wanting to use local bus stops have to walk even further.
A new crossing would help residents, particularly the elderly and children, to cross safely; and, by causing traffic to slow down, assist more generally with road safety.
Diana yesterday released results of a survey that she has been doing among hundreds of local residents since January. This showed that 98 per cent support the crossing.
Diana Johnson MP said: "I regret that Labour's Council Budget amendment funding this new crossing was voted down by Lib Dem councillors, including those for the area where residents overwhelmingly want this crossing.
"It is an unfortunate reflection on the priorities of those controlling Hull City Council that they were content to spend £4.5 million on publicity last year, but cannot find £0.5 million for a new crossing to improve the lives and safety of many local people.
"Despite this setback, Labour's campaign for this crossing will continue. We will not abandon these residents."
