Labour MP encourages local pensioners to beat the heating price hikes

Diana Johnson MP

Hull North MP Diana Johnson today urged Hull pensioners to claim the increased Winter Fuel Payments that Labour introduced to help cover the cost of heating bills.

The MP's call comes amid news of rising energy prices, with British Gas announcing a 14 per cent hike in gas and electricity bills earlier this month.

Almost 47,000 pensioners in Hull received the Winter Fuel Payment last year. Pensioners have until 23rd September to claim to ensure their Winter Fuel Payment is made before Christmas.

Diana Johnson MP, said: ""Hull pensioners can save hundreds of pounds on their heating costs every year thanks to the Winter Fuel Payments that the Labour Government introduced - opposed by the Liberal Democrats and Tories.

"Pensioners who have worked hard all their lives deserve every penny they get. Decent heating is not a luxury, but can be the difference between life and death. I'm calling on Hull's older residents to claim what they are entitled to and help beat the gas price rises.

"Winter Fuel Payments will mean households in Hull with someone over 60 will receive £200, households with those over 80 will receive £300. This will be a real help over the winter months.

"To find out more about what you, your friend, relative or neighbour are entitled to, call the Winter Fuel Helpline on 0845 9 15 15 15. Claims need to be made before 23rd September for payments before Christmas."

Pensions Minister Stephen Timms MP said: "This winter about eight million households will benefit from the £200 Winter Fuel Payment. Around two million people in those households with someone aged 80 and over will receive an extra payment of up to £100, receiving a total Winter Fuel Payment of £300.

"Paid alongside the Winter Fuel Payment this year, many households with someone aged 65 or over could also receive the Age-Related Payment of £200 to help with council tax bills. These are all non means-tested, tax-free lump sum payments."
