Hull North Labour MP Diana Johnson today paid tribute to the Prime Minister Tony Blair after he announced his resignation as Leader of the Labour Party.
Diana Johnson MP said: "Whatever different views people have about the political controversies of the past decade, one fact is clear: Tony Blair is the most successful Labour Leader in the Party's 101-year history.
"His main achievements include the historic peace settlement in Northern Ireland, a strong and stable economy, massive investment in key public services, the national minimum wage and improved rights for working people. Tony has laid the foundations for further reforms that will improve the lives of pensioners, children and carers.
"Tony Blair is the first Prime Minister to take radical action on issues such as climate change, World poverty, human rights and animal welfare.
"Tony has also championed the idea that hard-working modern families, whatever their incomes, are consumers with needs and aspirations who want choice in public services - and who expect rights and opportunities to be matched by responsibilities.
"Working as a team with Hull's John Prescott, Tony has shown courage, consistency and a long term vision so lacking in many of his critics.
"The challenge now for Labour is to continue showing such courage and leadership as we face the many challenges of the future. If we do this, Tony Blair will be the first - rather than only - Labour Leader to win three General Elections in a row."
