Diana Johnson MP

Hull North's Labour MP Diana Johnson today announced that she has nominated Gordon Brown and Alan Johnson to be Labour's new leadership team.

The contest for Labour's leadership positions was triggered by the resignation of Tony Blair and John Prescott last week.

Diana Johnson MP said: "I have nominated Gordon Brown as Leader and Alan Johnson as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party.

"Since 1997, Gordon Brown has been Britain's most successful Chancellor, combining a passion for social justice with economic strength. Gordon has the determination and leadership qualities to deliver for hard-working families in Hull and throughout Britain.

"For Labour's Deputy Leadership there are a number of very good candidates. I am nominating Alan Johnson not because he is a fellow Hull MP, but because I believe that he has the talent and experience to make the best Deputy Leader of the Labour Party.

"Working people in Hull need a fourth term of Labour Government to continue investment in public services and the regeneration of our city. Gordon and Alan are a winning team most likely to achieve that fourth term."
