Hull MP welcomes progress on Humber Bridge tolls

Hull North MP Diana Johnson has welcomed today's formal announcement in the Chancellor's Autumn Statement on reducing Humber Bridge tolls.

Diana Johnson MP said: "Today's highly welcome announcement on Bridge tolls comes as one of the Chancellor's emergency measures to boost growth.

"Following the 2008 Buchanan report on the economic impact of Humber Bridge tolls, a cut to around £1 for a car was our realistic short-term aim when the previous Labour Government started the review process two years ago.

"We now need more detail on when this partial debt write-off will produce the £1.50 toll and, after being cut to 1988 levels, could Bridge tolls creep up again?

"Given that users have already paid the cost of the Bridge around three times over, I'm sure that the local campaign will continue with the aim of cancelling the remaining Bridge debt and abolishing tolls in the longer term.

"As positive as the news on tolls is, there is much more that needs to be done to get the Humber economy moving."
