Hull MP tackles Yorkshire Water on flood failure

Diana Johnson MP

Diana Johnson MP has written to Yorkshire Water on behalf of Bransholme and Kingswood residents "let down" by the private water utility during the recent flooding.

The letter to Yorkshire Water's Managing Director comes after it emerged that all five water pumps at the Bransholme Pumping Station failed on 25 June.

The Hull North MP also demanded extra investment by Yorkshire Water in Hull's water management infrastructure.

Diana Johnson MP said: "Although weather as extreme as we saw recently was always going to have an impact, people in the Bransholme and Kingswood areas of Hull North are rightly infuriated that their problems were made so much worse by the failure of Yorkshire Water.

"With coastal and river flood defences the responsibility of the Environment Agency and central government and the proper cleansing of drains and gullies Hull City Council's duty, Yorkshire Water's area of responsibility concerns the different aspects of the City's water drainage infrastructure.

"As well as maintaining pumping facilities, the capacity of our water drainage and sewer systems to cope with the future demands posed by residential development and climate change comes within the remit of Yorkshire Water.

"Residents will be keen to hear when Yorkshire Water will be putting the required investment into Bransholme Pumping Station and into improving water drainage generally, especially in areas of Hull most vulnerable to flooding. I await their response with interest."
