Hull North MP Diana Johnson today welcomed the launch of a new logo to help promote increased public recognition of the dangers of deadly carbon monoxide (CO) gas.
The Carbon Monoxide Consumer Awareness Alliance (COCAA) this week launched the 'Be Carbon Monoxide Aware' logo in the House of Commons during Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week (15-19 October). COCAA is co-ordinated by gas industry safety watchdog CORGI and consists of all the major energy retailers, representatives across all fuel types, victim support charities and manufacturers of carbon monoxide alarms.
In addition to encouraging its use by all interested parties, individual COCAA members will be using the logo on items such as gas bills, leaflets and websites, encouraging the public to think about gas safety and make sure they are safeguarded against CO poisoning.
Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week is timed to coincide with the time of year when many households switch gas central heating systems on fully for the first time in months.
Speaking at the launch, Diana Johnson MP said: "I am pleased that the industry has come together to raise awareness of carbon monoxide poisoning, which can be lethal.
"I urge constituents to get their gas boiler systems checked regularly by a CORGI registered installer to ensure not just that they are working efficiently, but that they are safe from the deadly risk posed by CO.
"Having an audible carbon monoxide detector fitted in the home is also a great way to protect families from the dangers of CO."
Dan Caesar, COCAA Chair said: "It is vitally important that there is a concerted effort to make the public aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide and we believe that a co-ordinated approach across the industry is the best way to do this. The launch of the 'Be Carbon Monoxide Aware' logo is a significant step in our ongoing campaign".
