Hull MP opposes new queue-jumping rule at Commons

Hull North MP Diana Johnson today expressed opposition to new rules allowing MPs to jump queues for amenities such as lifts and restaurants in the Houses of Parliament.

The Parliamentary authorities recently reiterated the policy to those working in Parliament that "staff and other users should be prepared to give way to Members when queuing".

Diana Johnson MP said: "These unfair rules amount to institutionalised pomposity. Although they may have been proposed with the best of motives, they would be a backward step, giving the wrong view of the House of Commons to the outside world.

"My experience as an MP is that the only times when MPs need any priority are when we are rushing for a vote. However, it is unlikely that I would ever need to jump to the front of the queue in the canteen on the way to a vote!

"I've never had a problem accessing any service in Parliament and would feel embarrassed jumping a queue in front of staff and visitors. Members have their own Tea Room and there would be uproar if one group of MPs were served before another.

"I have always supported the modernisation of Parliament as an institution and tried to open up the House, and its better traditions, to people. This change is a throwback to years gone by.

"I value the work of our staff. They work long hours, playing a vital role in the work MPs do for constituents. These rules demean those who work for MPs, other Parliamentary staff and visitors to the Commons."
