Hull North MP Diana Johnson has responded to a story in today's Hull Daily Mail on a new pedestrian crossing in Beverley Road.
Hull North MP Diana Johnson said: "It's a bit rich for Lib Dems to complain about the Beverley Road crossing scheme.
"Lib Dems ran Hull City Council for five years from 2006 in a period when the authority had increased real terms funding each year from the former Labour Government. Lib Dems also specifically blocked Labour efforts to fund this crossing.
"Now this Lib Dem-backed Government is targeting the deepest cuts in the country at Hull. This makes road safety schemes such as this far more difficult to fund than they were a few years ago.
"When I was campaigning for this crossing three years ago Cllr McCobb refused to put his weight behind it and actually voted with Lib Dems to block it.
"With the new school opening nearby soon providing another reason for the crossing, I hope that funding can be found by the Labour Council to move forward with this project. However, I can understand why funding is far more difficult to come by with the cuts to Hull being made by the Lib Dem-backed Coalition Government."
