Hull MP highlights Government funding threat to Hull's Rape Crisis Centre

Diana Johnson MP

13/03/14, 00:00

Hull North MP Diana Johnson today raised concern about the future of Hull's Rape Crisis and Sexual Abuse Service due to Coalition funding cuts from the Ministry of Justice.

Diana Johnson MP told the Commons: "Humberside police has the highest number of child rapes reported to it of anywhere in the country, with 176 cases reported last year, alongside 193 adult cases.

"The Ministry of Justice has cut funding to the Hull rape crisis centre, and if it closes, people will have to travel 60 miles to Leeds for face-to-face specialist crisis counselling. May we have a debate on the Government's commitment to rape crisis centres and their secured funding?"

The exchange took place in Business Questions in the House of Commons.
