Hull MP demands answer on Lib Dem backing for Tories

Diana Johnson MP

Hull North Labour MP Diana Johnson today challenged the seat's Lib Dem candidate to tell voters whether he backs his Leader's plans to put the Tories into power.

The Lib Dem Leader Nick Clegg this week indicated to the national media that if the 2010 General Election resulted in no single party winning an outright Commons majority, Lib Dem MPs would swing their votes behind David Cameron to form a Conservative government.

In a letter to the Lib Dem Parliamentary Candidate for Hull North, Diana Johnson MP asks the question:

"In the unlikely event that you were elected to represent the people of Hull North as a Lib Dem MP, would you obey the Lib Dem Whip if it meant putting the Tories into power?"

Diana Johnson MP said: "The Tories haven't really changed. A Tory Government in 2010 would be a disaster for the people of Hull North, just as it was for 18 years from 1979.

"Lib Dem Leader Nick Clegg has now indicated to the national media that if no single party has a majority at the General Election, his party would hand power to the Tories. Voters going to bed with Nick Clegg would wake up with David Cameron.

"I want a straight 'yes' or 'no' answer from Hull North's Lib Dem candidate. Would he back Nick Clegg's plans to put David Cameron into Downing Street? The voters of Hull North have a right to know in advance."
