Hull North MP Diana Johnson today launched a campaign to stop unscrupulous employers getting an unfair advantage by breaking minimum wage law.
The MP has written to local trade unionists, business and faith groups asking them to report all cases of employers paying illegally low wages, and is encouraging her Hull North consitituents to tip her off about cases where Scrooge employers are flouting the law.
Diana Johnson MP said: "Nearly every business in Hull does exactly what's required by law but I'm determined to make sure that the worst employers do not try to make an unfair profit by trying to dodge the minimum wage and undercut law-abiding employers.
"I've been encouraging the Labour Government to keep on increasing the minimum wage, which has helped 140,000 workers in Yorkshire and Humber since its introduction. I've no intention of letting anyone get away with paying illegally low wages in Hull.
"With new powers announced this week, employers refusing to pay the legal minimum wage can end up with a criminal record and a £5,000 fine. If you know someone who isn't getting what they're owed, make sure they get in touch with me on 01482 319135 and I will have pleasure in passing on their details to the enforcement authorities."
