Hull North Labour MP has condemned the Council Tax increase announced by Hull City Council’s Lib Dem leadership today.
Hull North MP Diana Johnson said: “Once Police and Fire precepts are added this Hull Council Tax increase will be well over 4.99%. This is a regressive tax that hits 'just managing' working families the hardest and they’re proposing this in one of the UK’s most deprived cities during a cost-of-living crisis.
“Hull’s Lib Dem council are giving a higher priority to maximising their budgets for pet projects, such as their pre-local election ‘Spring Clean’, than to Hull families struggling to pay soaring bills. This should not be treated as a ‘business as usual’ year.
“Hull has lost a large proportion of its central government funding since 2010 and the Lib Dems were part of the Coalition Government that started imposing the unfair cuts on Hull. Hull’s Lib Dem Council are keen on having consultations on many local issues, such as traffic schemes, so will they put their proposed Council Tax hike out to a local referendum?”
