Diana Johnson MP today joined Hull campaigners handing in a 2,500 name petition to 10 Downing Street supporting a Hull North man's appeal against being deported to Afghanistan.
Gholam Nazary, 22, fled his native Afghanistan in 2002 after one of his brothers was murdered by the Taliban and his family was split up. Gholam's family are members of the Hazara tribe who have been persecuted by the Taliban.
Since seeking asylum in Britain, and arriving in Hull, Gholam has gained an education and worked with local young people at The Warren Centre on childcare and music projects.
Gholam's supporters in Hull recently organised a petition asking for the Home Office to support his application for full refugee status. So far, the Home Office has refused appeals from Gholam to remain in the UK.
Diana Johnson MP said: "Gholam is a constituent of mine in Hull North and a good friend to many young people in Hull.
"Since fleeing to Britain from Afghanistan, Gholam has gained educational qualifications and devoted himself to voluntary youth work at The Warren Centre.
"Given all that we know about Taliban extremism, until these terrorists have been overcome Gholam has a strong case for believing that he will be isolated and in serious danger if he is returned to Afghanistan. I hope that the Home Office will think again."
