Hull's Johnson launches bid to be Parliament's top dog

Hull's George Johnson has entered Westminster Dog of the Year 2006, the annual competition for dogs owned by MPs, Peers and political lobbyists.

George Johnson is the eight year-old black Labrador Retriever belonging to Hull North MP Diana Johnson. This will be the second year that George has entered the competition, since he became a 'Parliamentary dog' in 2005.

The winner will be announced at 12 noon on Wednesday 18 October at Victoria Tower Gardens, Westminster.

Organised jointly by Dogs Trust and the Kennel Club, Westminster Dog of the Year promotes responsible dog ownership and highlights the unique relationship between dog and owner. Entry is open to dogs from all different backgrounds - whether they are crossbreed or pedigree. Contenders for the Westminster accolade are judged on their personality and good deeds, rather than looks or political preferences!

George is hoping to match the standard set by last year's winner, Torres, a Pug owned by Conservative MP Tony Baldry.

Diana Johnson MP said: "George has been my loyal companion and protector for eight years and he takes life travelling between Hull and London in his stride.

"I'm very proud of George and I'm sure he will represent Hull with distinction!"
