Hull's floods - one year on

Diana Johnson MP

20/06/08, 00:00

In the week that sees the first anniversary of the 2007 floods, Hull North MP Diana Johnson has arranged a coffee morning for constituents affected by those traumatic events.

The coffee morning takes place at the David Lloyd Centre on Raich Carter Way on Sunday 29 June, from 11am to 1pm.

The purpose of the coffee morning is to listen to Hull North residents about their experience of coping with the flood and its aftermath, and to update them on progress with many of the issues and future challenges that arose from the flood.

The event will also be attended by Neil Sykes of the Consumer Council for Water.

Diana Johnson MP said: "Over the past year, there have been many detailed reports published about the events of June 2007 - and the final Pitt Review is imminent.

"As important as these have been, I always like to keep in touch with residents directly affected by the floods. I want to hear about their experience of what happened, the situation for them as it is now and their views about our readiness to handle possible future flooding emergencies.

"From the residents that contact me every week, I know that water pumping, drainage, insurance and flood recovery work are just a few of the matters that still concern many residents."

Diana will be presenting her petition, started in August 2007, calling for upgrade work at Bransholme Pumping Station to the Consumer Council for Water. Yorkshire Water has so far announced £1.5 million of investment to improve the performance of this pumping station, which broke down during the 2007 flooding emergency.
