Honouring Hull's war heroes

With Remembrance Sunday approaching, Hull North MP Diana Johnson is encouraging World War veterans living in Hull to apply for the Ministry of Defence's new Veterans' Badge.

Last year, the Ministry of Defence introduced the new Veterans' Badge, which was developed in association with veterans' organisations and designed to be worn on the lapel of civilian attire by former Servicemen. The Badge is intended to help the wider public recognise veterans and the contribution they made to Britain's survival.

Men and women who served in the UK Armed Forces in the First and Second World War are entitled to the Badge, along with other groups that include the Cyprus Regiment, Merchant Navy Seaman, the Home Guard, Polish Forces under UK command and war widows and other widowers receiving and widows pension.

Diana Johnson MP said: "Our war veterans sacrificed so much to save this country from tyranny all those years ago. For many different reasons, some of them never sought or received official honours at the time.

"I am pleased that the Ministry of Defence is putting that right in order that people, particularly in the younger generations, can be reminded of the price that many paid to secure the freedoms we enjoy.

"These badges can be worn on civilian attire and will help recognise the invaluable contribution made by veterans. They should be worn with real pride.
