Hanging up on silent calls

Diana Johnson MP

07/03/06, 00:00

Hull North MP Diana Johnson today welcomed the Government's announcement that companies will face fines of up to £50,000 if they plague Hull residents with silent telephone calls.

Diana Johnson MP said: "Silent calls are annoying and distressing, particularly for the elderly, hard of hearing and people living on their own.

"I am delighted that the Labour Government has increased the maximum penalty from £5,000 to £50,000, to deter the companies that make these nuisance calls.

"It's time for companies who are responsible for silent calls to hang up."
