Government Minister to open Newland Avenue community centre

Ed Miliband MP, Government Minister for the Third Sector, is to open a new £2.2 million community centre tomorrow (Friday 22 September) in Hull North's Newland Avenue, accompanied by local MP Diana Johnson.

The ministerial opening takes place from 1pm and the minister, who will be speaking at 2.15pm, will highlight the contribution of faith-based organisations to voluntary sector services and community regeneration.

The new facility is run by the Community Church, which has been working with the local community in Hull for over 25 years, helping a range of people from ex-offenders, the homeless and drug users to children, older people and the disabled. The new centre has two floors of community space including a large auditorium, fully equipped conference facilities, training rooms, creche, large kitchen and cafe, and a Crisis Pregnancy Centre.

Anne Dannerolle, the centre manager, said: "The new building is already proving a huge success with the local community.

"Churches are often seen as dark and dismal places. This new building is warm and welcoming, and everyone who comes here loves the new facility. Our work is about making a difference, bringing hope, and changing lives. This new centre is already helping us to make that difference to hundreds of people in our local area".

Diana Johnson MP said: "I know how much the Government values the contribution of faith groups to the wider voluntary and charitable sector. The Community Church will be justly proud to show Ed Miliband their exciting new centre in Newland Avenue.

"I will also take the minister to see the other work being done by the voluntary sector family of groups across Hull. They are all playing an important part in Hull's regeneration."

Diana Johnson MP will also accompary the minister on visits to Hull Churches' Home from Hospital, in Princes Avenue, a charity that supports people who have been in hospital; and CASE, in Charles Street, which provides training to people with learning disabilities.
