Fun not fright on Bonfire Night

Diana Johnson MP

03/11/09, 00:00

With 5 November coming up Hull North MP Diana Johnson has backed a crackdown on firework hooligans and underlined the importance of firework safety.

Diana Johnson MP said: "I know that fireworks can be a worry for many people in Hull, especially in the run up to Guy Fawkes Night.

"Controlling fireworks is very important. We need to make sure that fireworks are enjoyed safely by individuals and families. The majority must be protected from the anti-social minority who deliberately misuse fireworks.

"I've been told of cases where families have been disturbed in the early hours of the morning, children have been threatened by fireworks yobs and some elderly people feel trapped inside their own homes. This time of year can also be unpleasant for family pets.

"By law fireworks must not be sold to anyone under 18. They cannot be carried in a public place. The Labour Government introduced powers for the police to fine those who cause disturbance late at night, letting off fireworks in the street. Youngsters who carry fireworks in public can be fined.

"If we want to avoid returning to the whole issue of the private sale of fireworks it is important that the current laws on fireworks are observed and enforced properly."

Consumers Minister Kevin Brennan added: "Bonfire Night is a time families enjoy. But unfortunately accidents can and do happen. Even if you think you know how to handle fireworks look again at the Fireworks Code to ensure that you and your loved ones have a safe and happy time on bonfire night."
