Coalition abandons flood risk areas

Diana Johnson MP

08/03/12, 00:00

Hull North MP Diana Johnson has condemned comments from the Coalition's Flood Minister announcing that the Government will not renew its flood defence agreement with the insurance industry.

Diana Johnson MP said: "After the Hull floods in 2007, Lib Dems in opposition were claiming that Labour wasn't spending enough on flood defences. But their Government is cutting flood defence investment by 27%. Now, in pulling out of the agreement with the insurance industry, they're telling householders in Hull and other flood risk areas that we're on our own.

"Just airbricks on individual homes will not protect communities from flooding and this betrayal means that affordable insurance will be even harder to get, blighting the local property market."
