09/11/05, 00:00

Hull North MP Diana Johnson today announced five-year-old Jack Burgess of Thoresby Primary School as the winner of this year's competition to design the MP's Christmas card.

The winning entry and runners-up have been selected by Hull City Chairman, Adam Pearson, from the hundreds of entries submitted by children in primary schools across the Hull North constituency. Hull City will be printing all the winning entries in their matchday programme for their fixture against Cardiff City on 3 December.

The finished Christmas card design will be printed at Palm Press in Hull and sent by the MP to hundreds of people across the country; from constituents, family and friends to regional and national figures in charities, business and politics - including the Prime Minister.

The competition winner, Jack Burgess will now be invited to meet Diana Johnson MP at Westminster before Christmas to hand in his winning card at 10 Downing Street.

Competition judge Adam Pearson said: "The decision was extremely difficult with all of the cards of such a high standard. It really was an impossible task as they were all so good, which is why we will feature all the winners in our matchday programme."

Diana Johnson MP said: "I am truly impressed by the standard of the entries from Hull North's primary schools. Hull's children are certainly full of the Christmas spirit!

"Jack's drawing is now in the process of being reproduced as my 'official' Christmas greeting card and will be sent to all my family, friends and colleagues across the country and abroad. It was a pleasure to look through all the entries and I look forward to presenting the prizes and joining Jack in delivering his winning card at 10 Downing Street.

"This is the first year the competition has been organised. I am indebted to all the headteachers and class teachers who encouraged their pupils to take part. I am also grateful to the Hull businesses and others who have kindly sponsored the competition, including Hull City, Hull Daily Mail, Hull Trains, Palm Press, Hull's Odeon Cinema, the Co-op, UNISON and Usdaw.

"The competition has proven very popular and is a good example of what can be achieved in partnership with the people of Hull in promoting the creative talents of our children."
