Hull MP backs Bill to exempt unpaid family carers from the Bedroom Tax

Hull North MP Diana Johnson was today (Tuesday 14 October) one of the sponsors of a Labour bid to exempt carers from the Bedroom Tax.

Barbara Keeley MP presented a Ten Minute Rule Bill to the House of Commons with the aim of exempting carers and those needing overnight care from the Bedroom Tax. Figures from the Department of Work and Pensions tell us that 60,000 carers are affected by the Bedroom Tax.

Hull North MP Diana Johnson is backing a Parliamentary attempt to exempt victims of domestic violence from paying the Bedroom Tax on “panic rooms” in their homes.

Safe and sanctuary rooms provide victims of domestic violence with safety from violence and harm and often have reinforced doors and windows, alarms, fire proofing and a direct line to the local police.

Two-faced Lib Dems in 24-hour Bedroom Tax u-turn

Hull North MP Diana Johnson has slammed this week’s “two-faced” Lib Dem behaviour over the Bedroom Tax.

On Wednesday, the President of the Lib Dems said that their party was withdrawing support for the Bedroom Tax.

Then, on Thursday, 46 Lib Dem peers voted in the House of Lords against a Labour motion against the Bedroom Tax. The motion was lost by 173 votes to 188 – only 15 votes.

Diana Johnson MP has called for the Bedroom Tax to be scrapped, after the Government announced further Discretionary Housing Payment funding to ease the problems the tax causes.

The Hull North MP believes that the Bedroom Tax is a cruel and unfair measure that hits over 400,000 disabled people and 60,000 households with carers across the country. 80,000 people have been hit with the Bedroom Tax in the Yorkshire and Humber region, including 50,400 disabled people.
