Not a penny more for Hull schools as Surrey gets extra £24.8m

Hull North MP Diana Johnson has reacted to a new schools funding formula, announced today by the Coalition, under which Surrey gets an extra £24.8m but Hull gets nothing.

 

Diana Johnson MP said: "Just as we've seen with what the Coalition has done on local government funding, and wants to do on NHS funding, the most prosperous areas, mainly in the South, gain most from this Government. Often this comes at the expense of the most disadvantaged areas, such as Hull.

 

 

"Surrey is getting £24.8m more for its schools the biggest increase in the country. Meanwhile, Hull gets nothing.

 

 

"In Hull we're also seeing cuts in Whitehall funding hitting early years and children's centres. Yet again, Hull is not getting a fair deal from this Government."

 

 

In the Commons chamber, the Hull North MP pressed the Lib Dem Education Minister David Laws MP on whether Hull schools would gain anything from the changes to the distribution of schools funding announced by the Coalition Government today,

 

 

The Minister replied that Hull is not under-funded, but figures released by the Government indicate that the most extra money will be going to schools in the wealthiest areas with Surrey being the biggest winner.
