Dear Editor,
I was pleased to see your front page story (Mail, 29 October) setting out the police’s pledge for a tough line on anti-social behaviour and disorder in the city.
In the face of opposition from Lib Dem MPs, the current Government has provided more powers to enable communities and the police to deal with the anti-social minority who make life hell for others.
I want to see these powers, and the record police numbers, used to the full in making our streets safer.
Technology such as CCTV is incredibly helpful to the work of the police. However, it is disappointing that Hull City Council fails to staff its CCTV control centre in Festival House properly. This
means long delays in getting CCTV tapes to the police for them to deal quickly with offenders. After opposing the first CCTV cameras for Hull, the Lib Dem Council recently decided not to apply for
Home Office funding for additional CCTV cameras.
Many of my constituents contact me in frustration when they feel that little is being done by the Council and the police to combat criminal and loutish behaviour in their neighbourhood. Rather than
warm words of support from the Council Leader, Hull people want to see genuine commitment to supporting our local police in doing their job.
Yours sincerely,
Diana Johnson MP
Kingston upon Hull North
