Dear Editor,
I was sorry that your correspondent Ian Newton (Mail 12 July) sees the response to the devastating floods in Hull in purely party political terms.
Over the past fortnight I have seen for myself the havoc the rain has bought to so many people and communities across the city. I have not in anyway “downplayed” the suffering I have witnessed for
myself. In the face of this disaster, we have seen the best of Hull – from the emergency services and council workers to those just acting as ‘good neighbours’.
As one of Hull’s MPs I have, along side Alan Johnson and John Prescott, been working as hard as I can to ensure that Hull gets the help that it needs. Together we have not always chosen to
publicise this work – there is nothing to be gained for Hull in turning the misery of many people into a political game - and sometimes it has gone unreported.
Either way, Alan, John and I have used every opportunity to press upon the Government, and other organisations, the need to pay full attention to the plight of Hull people and to heed the lessons
of these floods. As accurate figures become available for repair costs, we will work to get a fair and proper recovery programme for Hull.
Once again, I pay tribute to everyone in Hull for their magnificent spirit over the past few weeks and hope that all our representatives can continue to work together to ensure that Hull is back on
its feet as soon as possible.
Yours sincerely,
Diana Johnson MP
Kingston upon Hull North
