I am Hull North’s local Labour Member of Parliament. First elected in May 2005, and re-elected in May 2010, I work hard representing the Hull wards of Avenue, Beverley, University, Bransholme East, Bransholme West, Orchard Park and Greenwood, Bricknell, King’s Park and Newland. Although this website only covers a small fraction of my activity, I hope that it provides a useful insight into the nature of my work for Hull North.

Dear Editor I am delighted that the Labour Government has committed a massive £156 million to regenerate the Orchard Park Estate (Mail, 17 July). This comes on top of the Labour Government’s other investment for health and other public services in Hull North. However, with work not starting until 2013, and huge spending cuts planned by the Tories and Lib Dems nationally, this funding is only safe while we have a Labour Government. There must now be genuine consultation with Orchard Park people and their elected councillors to ensure that the scheme addresses their needs and aspirations and provides real choice about how their housing is designed, improved and managed. To ensure that the errors of the 1960s are not repeated, Orchard Park people must have a real say in the design of the new housing, which homes are to be demolished, the type of new homes built and the balance between housing for sale and affordable rented housing. Decisions on these issues must not be imposed from Guildhall. So far consultation over the scheme’s proposals has been severely lacking, as I heard earlier this year when I met Orchard Park residents. I passed their concerns on when I met the Housing Minister at Westminster. We must also ensure that while the scheme is developed existing homes are not left empty needlessly, especially when there are so many local people waiting for homes.
