Dear Editor
I was surprised by the comments of the Leader of Hull City
Council in your article on the Regulation of Investigatory Powers
Act (27 March 2009).
Is this the same Leader who in an article in your paper on
20 February 2009 claimed that he wanted a blanket ban on its use or
would tie up his officers in so much red tape that they would
they would not be able to use the law?
It is excellent news that he has now seen sense and the very
important role that this law can play in helping obtain evidence,
for example in joint Police and Hull City Council investigations
into paedophiles or organised crime in the city. What a pity he
sent out a message in February that his council was not going to
co-operate in going after criminals in the city through using this
law.
Yours sincerely
Diana Johnson MP
