I am Hull North’s local Labour Member of Parliament. First elected in May 2005, and re-elected in May 2010, I work hard representing the Hull wards of Avenue, Beverley, University, Bransholme East, Bransholme West, Orchard Park and Greenwood, Bricknell, King’s Park and Newland. Although this website only covers a small fraction of my activity, I hope that it provides a useful insight into the nature of my work for Hull North.

10 September 2009: To Hull Daily Mail - published 14 September 2009

Dear Editor Leconfield Lib Dem Denis Healy accuses me of "scare tactics" over the future of the Orchard Park housing scheme under a possible Tory government (Mail, 10 September 2009). After recently asking Mail readers to believe that the Taliban's international networks have had no connection with terrorist attacks in the UK, Mr Healy now seeks to reassure us that funding for housing schemes started by the Labour Government would be safe under the Tory government that he appears to hope for in 2010. Could this be because in a hung parliament the Lib Dems would go into coalition with David Cameron? I do not share Mr Healy's rose-tinted faith in what a Tory government would mean for housing regeneration in Hull - or for our schools, health services or children's centres. Many people will remember Labour's warnings about Margaret Thatcher in 1979 and the 18 years of destruction and neglect that followed, especially in areas such as Hull. I am pleased that Hull City Council managed to submit a bid to the Government for the Orchard Park housing scheme. This was in contrast to the more usual Lib Dem failure to bid for Government money that we saw over free swimming, Flood Protection Grants for Hull homes and the first round of new funding for council house-building. Now we need proper consultation with Orchard Park people to ensure that any available investment in Orchard Park is used to meet their needs and aspirations.
