I would like to thank everyone who supported me in last week’s General Election. I have been very moved by the kind words and messages I have received from so many wonderful Hull North people. It really is a privilege to represent such people.

 
Although, I agree with your report (Mail, 8 May) that the Lib Dem campaign against me was highly personal, I do take issue on one point. At the end of the unnecessary recount I did shake hands with the losing Lib Dem candidate in the traditional way. At the same time we exchanged a few words in which I again expressed my disappointment at the nasty and dishonest nature of the smear campaign that the Lib Dems had conducted against me throughout the past five years.

 
As the re-elected Labour MP for Hull North I will continue to do my best to serve my fellow Hull North residents, both at Westminster and in Hull.  

 
As I write, the Lib Dems are showing what they meant by ‘doing things differently’ by plotting behind closed doors to put the Tories into Downing Street - just as I warned they would.

 
With both Hull City Council and the Government in Lib Dem or Tory control these could be tough years for Hull, especially for our public services. It is all the more vital that along with my fellow Hull Labour MPs, Alan Johnson and Karl Turner, we provide a strong and experienced team speaking up for our great city.
